Larimar is an exceptionally rare gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic, in a small deposit on the mountainside of Los Chupaderos in the Sierra de Bahoruco range of Barahona Province. Its famous Caribbean blue colour comes from copper in this unique volcanic formation, not found anywhere else. Larimar is mined by hand through steep, rugged tunnels. Each piece reflects intensive labour, natural scarcity, and a supply that is limited and finite.
