Larimar is a rare and beautiful gemstone that formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago. It is a type of pectolite, a mineral composed of sodium calcium silicate, and its distinctive blue color comes from the presence of copper within its crystal structure.

Formation:

Larimar formed in volcanic areas where hot gases interacted with the surrounding rock, causing chemical changes. Over time, the copper-rich volcanic fluids seeped into cavities and fissures in the host rock. This process created the unique blue colour and silky, chatoyant texture, easiest to see in higher grade Larimar. 

Mining:

Larimar is exclusively found in the Dominican Republic, located in the Caribbean. The primary mining area is in the Bahoruco Mountains, specifically around the town of Barahona. The stone is typically extracted from hard rock formations through traditional mining methods, which require skilled labor. Miners carefully extract Larimar from pockets of volcanic rock, and then it's shaped, polished, and processed into the beautiful cabochons, beads, pendants and carvings we see.

Why It's Rare:

Larimar is extremely rare for several reasons:

1. Limited Location: It is only found in the Dominican Republic, making it geographically very limited in supply.
2. Unique Formation: The combination of volcanic activity, copper presence, and the specific geological conditions needed to form Larimar only occurs in a few select areas of the world, similar to agates!
3. Supply and Demand: Even though mining operations exist, there is a relatively small amount of Larimar being unearthed each year especially of high grades (quality). This combined with its unmatched beauty and demand makes it a highly coveted stone.
